Erb's Palsy is a medical disorder that is caused by an injury to the brachial plexus nerve bundle that connects the arm with the spinal cord through the shoulder. This injury typically occurs when shoulder dystocia, or when the shoulder becomes blocked against the pubic bone during delivery, is not properly addressed by the delivering doctor.
There are numerous accepted ways to deal with shoulder dystocia and yet doctors continue to make errors that result in the shoulder of the infant being overly stretched. This extension of the shoulder can cause the brachial plexus nerves to stretch, partially tear or completely rupture.
When the brachial plexus nerves are damaged, it causes, depending on the severity of the injury:
- Loss of muscle control in the hand or arm
- Partial or total paralysis
