Causes and Types of Burn Injuries

Burn injuries can be caused in a variety of ways, including:

Victims who suffer burn injuries can spend years in a rehabilitation process that is often painful and expensive. In the worst cases, these burn injuries can result in fatal accidents and cases of wrongful death.

There are several factors that are used to determine the severity of a burn. The most common types of burn injuries include:

Third Degree Burns

Third degree burns affect the outer layer, the dermis and the hypodermis and can cause a great amount of pain and scarring. Skin tissue and other structures, such as hair follicles and sweat glands, can be destroyed by the heat of a third degree burn and the skin may eventually go numb. Third degree burns require extensive treatment.

Second Degree Burns

Second degree burns go deeper than the outer layer of skin and penetrate to the underlying layer of skin, called the dermis. These burns can cause swelling and blisters, in addition to more severe pain. Without proper treatment, blood flow in the tissue will decrease and the burn can become a third degree burn.

First Degree Burns

First degree burns are the least severe burn injuries and are limited in terms of size and depth. These injuries only go as deep as the outer layer of skin, are not very painful, have a minor amount of pain and require much less treatment than second and third degree burn injuries. Sunburns are a common example of a first degree burn.

Other than these three most common burn types, fourth degree burns can cause catastrophic and fatal damage for victims.
